Fire doors perform a vital role, from forming fire compartmentation to protection of escape routes, they are an essential components of any organisation’s passive fire protection strategy. They must operate correctly, be regularly inspected and third-party certified.
Hughes and Associates has certified fire door inspectors, installers and maintenance engineers that ensure that fire doors that are installed are kept in a condition that ensures they perform to their requirements and protect the area as designed.
At present Hughes and Associates are responsible for nearly 50,000 fire doors nationally in all type of environments.
To maintain the integrity of fire barriers, dampers are used in ductwork and ceiling cavities to seal any compartment breaches.
Dampers form part of a passive fire protection system and are designed to close in the event of fire. Appropriate installation and maintenance of dampers is crucial. A survey can help you achieve compliance by identifying their location and visually inspecting them for signs of corrosion, obstruction or damage.
All dampers must be regularly maintained, Hughes and Associates can carry out a thorough survey to catalogue their location and carry out effective, ongoing maintenance and management of the assets.
Fire safety risk assessments are mandatory. They assess the risk to an organisation of a fire occurring, the means of escape for staff and how to minimise damage to assets and property. Depending on the findings of the assessment, appropriate action must be taken to minimise any risks.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 introduced stricter requirements and enforcement action. We can help ensure your organisation adheres to the letter of the law by offering independent assistance and advice.
An effective fire safety management system requires a clear and comprehensible fire safety policy and strategy.
Policies can be written on a corporate or local level. Either way, they should reflect the individual needs of the organisation and its premises and outline exactly what the arrangements are in the event of a fire.
Hughes and Associates produce policies and procedures in consultation with our clients to create comprehensive fire strategy documents.
Hughes and Associates can also provide fire engineers reports. Following the findings of an intrusive survey, a fire engineer’s report is conducted if combustible materials are found to be present in the external wall of a building. During the assessment, a fire engineer will consider the findings of the intrusive survey in relation to other contributing factors. From the building’s height and use to the residents’ profiles and existing fire safety precautions, the scope of the report is extensive. Fire engineers design systems and provide advice in respect to fire safety measures. From new-builds to those undergoing refurbishment or change of use, fire engineers are called upon to ensure buildings meet legislative requirements with an emphasis on protecting life, property and the wider environment.
We fully understand the absolute necessity and importance of maintaining the integrity of a fire compartment within a building. The concept can be described easily as a ‘cube’ and all sides of the cube, including the top and the bottom, must be sealed to withhold smoke and fire for a specific period of time, depending on the use of the compartment.
A compartment could be a cupboard, corridor, room or series of rooms but all will relate to each other and offer the protection designed within the Fire Strategy for the building. Hughes and Associates have the professional skills to design or review the fire strategy and conduct a complete compartment survey to ensure any breaches are highlighted and recorded.
We can then record the full survey and itemised breaches on our Eyecomply software that will show a floor plan of the area with each breach given a location pin indicating the exact position in the room the breach is. A before photograph of the breach is taken for identification and audit purposes. Full specifications and tender documents can be formed from the outgoing reports within Eyecomply to complete the works.
